President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s vital role in the Maldives’ luxury tourism and broader economic development during a statement today, highlighting the enduring ties between the two nations across multiple sectors.
“The UK continues to be a critical partner in our development journey,” President Muizzu said, underscoring the country's significance not only as a top contributor to the Maldives’ luxury tourism sector but also as a reliable trade and investment ally.
As of mid-year, the UK ranks as the third-largest source market for tourism to the Maldives, with over 114,000 British visitors recorded so far in 2025. The UK held the same position at the end of 2024, contributing to the arrival of 180,000 tourists—a testament to the country’s consistent appeal among British holidaymakers.
Beyond tourism, the UK also plays a substantial role in the Maldives’ fisheries sector. President Muizzu noted that the Maldives exports over USD 20 million worth of canned and processed fish products to the UK annually, making it one of the country's leading export destinations.
Looking to the future, President Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ commitment to building a resilient, future-ready economy. He pointed to recently enacted legislation designed to broaden investment opportunities and attract foreign capital into key growth sectors.
“We are prioritizing industries that will sustain the next generation,” he said, citing digital infrastructure, renewable energy, fisheries, and creative industries as focal points for transformation.
A particular emphasis was placed on the creative economy—with goals to grow the sector to contribute 15% of GDP by 2030. President Muizzu outlined ambitions to nurture talent in digital content creation, gaming, culture, and the arts.
“Our youth are tech-savvy and future-oriented,” he said. “We have begun laying the foundation for a robust digital economy.”
He added that this presents a unique opportunity for UK-based technology firms, including software providers, e-governance specialists, and cybersecurity companies, to collaborate and invest in the Maldives’ digital evolution.
The occasion also marked the launch of the “Maldives Fisheries Brand,” a premium label designed to reinforce the country’s reputation for high-quality, sustainably-sourced seafood.
