The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has called on the public to avoid all non-essential sea travel as strong winds and rough seas hit the country. The warning comes as the Hulhan’gu (southwest) monsoon intensifies across the islands.
In a public notice, the MNDF advised island communities and seafarers to stay alert and keep a close watch on weather updates. The advisory also recommends avoiding night-time travel and postponing trips during yellow or orange weather alerts.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast severe weather over the next four days. A white alert is currently in effect from HA. Atoll to Faafu Atoll, from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., with winds expected to reach up to 40 mph.
Some areas are already experiencing stronger-than-expected conditions. In Hulhumalé, gusts reached 52 mph earlier today, causing damage to property and vehicles. The highest wind speeds so far were recorded in F. Nilandhoo, where gusts hit 61 mph.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and continue to urge the public to take safety precautions seriously.
