New Terminal at Velana International Airport Set to Open in July

Velana International Airport (VIA) is gearing up to open a new terminal section to the public on July 26, announced Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). This development marks a significant step toward upgrading airport services and boosting passenger capacity.
At the Aviation Forum held at Hulhule’ Island Hotel, MACL’s Chief Technology Officer, Shafeez Ahmed, shared details about the launch. The new terminal will feature modern amenities such as self-check-in kiosks, automated baggage drop counters, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. Initially, six aerobridges will support its operations.

All existing services currently offered at the old terminal will gradually transfer to the new facility within three months of opening. The project is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development along with the Saudi Fund, with an estimated total cost of MVR 7 billion.
The construction site is bustling with around 600 workers, who are putting in long hours to meet the deadline. Once completed, the new terminal will increase the airport’s capacity to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually—a 20 percent rise in processing capability.

Covering 78,000 square meters, the terminal is designed to serve about 8,000 passengers daily. It will also include 38 immigration counters and seven additional check-in counters, all aimed at creating a smoother, faster travel experience for visitors.
This major upgrade will position Velana International Airport as a modern, efficient gateway welcoming travelers to the Maldives.
