President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed optimism that the creative industry's contribution to the Maldivian economy could reach the 15% GDP target ahead of the planned 2030 deadline. His remarks followed a visit to the Maldives Expo 2025, which officially opened on 23 May.
After inaugurating the event, President Muizzu returned the next day to tour the exhibits, engage with creators, and observe the diverse talents on display.
Highlighting the strong participation and wide range of disciplines represented, the president said the exhibition signals the beginning of broader national efforts to develop the creative industry. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the goal, first announced as part of his government’s manifesto, but added that the rising interest and energy in the sector suggest the target could be reached even sooner.
To support this growth, President Muizzu announced several initiatives, including the introduction of a digital platform aimed at expanding opportunities for creatives locally and internationally. He also referenced upcoming systems like a national payment gateway and seller accounts to support commercial activity in the sector.
In a further step, the president revealed that the upcoming year will be declared the Year of National Innovation—part of a wider plan to support economic opportunities and empower Maldivian citizens through creative enterprise.
President Muizzu closed by reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the creative industry and supporting its role in driving national development.
