WHO Reaffirms Support for Maldives’ Healthcare Future

Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, has praised the World Health Organization (WHO) for its lasting contributions to the country's healthcare sector. In a recent meeting with Payden, the newly appointed WHO Representative to the Maldives, the minister welcomed her official start in the role and accepted her letter of credence.

Their discussion focused on the WHO’s continued support in shaping national health policies, particularly in improving access to medical services, disease prevention, and emergency response efforts. Dr. Khaleel acknowledged the progress made in public health and highlighted the role WHO has played in strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.

Payden reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to working closely with Maldivian authorities during her term. The minister also expressed gratitude for WHO’s recognition of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who received the WHO Director-General’s Special Award for Tobacco Control. He noted key steps taken by the government, such as the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act and a generational tobacco sales ban for anyone born after 1 January 2007.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of WHO’s presence in the Maldives, dating back to 1965. Over the decades, the organisation has been a key partner in developing a resilient and accessible healthcare system across the country.
