Maldives Reshapes Sports Future with Landmark Legal Reform

In a ceremony held at the President’s Office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu described the ratification of the First Amendment to the Maldives Sports Act as a historic milestone in the country’s sports history. He stated that this change opens a new chapter for the sporting community across the nation.

President Muizzu emphasised that the Amendment will significantly improve how sports are developed and managed in the Maldives. A key focus of the changes is decentralisation—bringing sports opportunities closer to communities and increasing access for athletes across all regions. The amendment also aims to raise all sporting disciplines to professional standards.
One of the most notable changes is the establishment of a National Sports Fund. This fund is expected to provide consistent and increased financial support for sports development. The President also mentioned that employees of current sports corporations, which will be dissolved, will be offered alternative employment opportunities.
The Amendment also brings important structural changes, ensuring greater transparency, better governance, and improved administration of the sector. President Muizzu said this move will allow more athletes to compete and thrive on both national and international stages.

He further highlighted two major advancements in inclusivity: the Maldives Paralympic Committee will now function as a fully independent legal entity, and for the first time, gender discrimination in sports is officially prohibited by law in the Maldives.
