The landmark Rasmale’ Project has reached a major milestone, with 101 hectares of land successfully reclaimed so far, according to an update from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Sunday.
The ambitious project, launched on 18 December 2023, plans to reclaim a total of 1,009 hectares of land, divided into 12 sections. The work is being carried out by Mohan Mutha Exports Private Limited and China Railway Construction Corporation, who are jointly responsible for four of the sections. From these, 378 hectares are expected to be reclaimed in total.
As of 13 April, 101 hectares have been completed, and HDC has announced that shore protection efforts on the reclaimed land will begin in the coming days.
Initially set for completion within ten months, the government has revised the timeline following unexpected challenges that caused some delays.
Rasmale’ is being developed as the first zero-carbon city in the Indian Ocean, and aims to deliver 65,000 housing units. The project is designed to meet strict environmental standards, transforming the area into a model Eco City.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that Rasmale’ represents a major step forward in the Maldives’ drive towards improved housing and environmental sustainability. The government views it as a game-changing initiative in both technological development and ecological planning.
