WAMCO Joins Hands with Social Ministry to Empower Vulnerable Communities

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Social Development to provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and those facing poverty.

The initiative supports people identified through the government’s ongoing 'Haalu Kihineh?' programme, which aims to assess the well-being of residents across all islands in the Maldives. Launched in May last year, the programme involves door-to-door visits to identify those in need and connect them with necessary support services.

Under the new agreement, individuals with disabilities will be offered jobs suited to their physical abilities. Those facing poverty will be considered based on their skills and qualifications, ensuring fair access to employment.

The Ministry has stated that this effort is part of a broader mission to reduce dependency and help people live with dignity. The collaboration also reflects President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of building a compassionate and resilient society.

So far, officials have visited over 10,000 households in Hulhumalé and across 14 atolls. The programme continues to expand, aiming to reach every household in the country within a year.
The Ministry is working closely with local councils, WDCs, and other agencies to carry out this large-scale effort, which not only identifies those in need but also helps rebuild trust between citizens and the state.
