A major expansion of the Quran memorization project will begin next month across several islands in the Maldives, according to Islamic Affairs Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed. This comes as part of the government’s broader effort to improve Quran education in the provinces.
The program will be introduced in nine villages: HA. Dhihdhoo, HDH. Kulhudhuffushi, R.
Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, AA. Feridhoo, DH. Kudahuvadhoo, GDH. Thinadhoo, L. Gan, and S. Hithadhoo—particularly in areas with existing Islamic centers or larger populations.
In addition, Quran teachers will be assigned to branches in eight other villages, including HA. Utheemu and TH. Guraidhoo, where teaching has faced challenges or where centers had closed.
The center will also appoint coordinators and admin staff in Fuvahmulah, and from next month, teacher salaries will be covered.
To encourage Quran memorization, the government aims to train 100 hafiz each year. Graduation ceremonies, now planned for the 27th night of Ramadan, will feature special gowns for students, replacing the previous medal system.
This move reflects the government’s continued commitment to strengthening Islamic education across the country.
