Maldives Opens Its First Salt Manufacturing Facility in Dhidhdhoo

The Maldives has officially launched its first-ever salt manufacturing facility, a groundbreaking step for the country’s domestic industry. Located in the Haa Alifu Atoll’s Dhidhdhoo region, this new factory is the result of a collaboration between Maldivian company M. Deep Investment and their Japanese partner. This venture aims to harness the country’s abundant natural resources, offering premium edible salt to the global market.

Built on a 15,000-square-foot site leased from Dhidhdhoo, the factory will operate for 15 years. The idea was sparked after quality tests conducted in Japan confirmed that the seawater from the Maldives possesses an exceptional mineral composition. These findings propelled the construction, which began last year, focusing on producing high-quality salt.

The factory uses sustainable methods, relying on the power of sunlight and heat to evaporate seawater. It will offer three types of salt, from regular table salt to more specialized varieties. The company also plans to explore salt tailored for fish curing, expanding its product range. Regular testing will ensure the highest standards of quality, with inspections carried out both in the Maldives and Japan.

Looking ahead, M. Deep Investment has ambitious plans for growth, with hopes of building four additional salt production facilities throughout the country. This expansion will not only cater to local markets, including resorts and inhabited islands, but also support the wider push for locally produced goods.
