Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun land reclamation works in K. Gulhi, a small but scenic island near the capital, Male’. The ceremony marking the start of the project was attended by MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudee, and Gulhi Council’s President, Moosa Safeel, along with other senior officials.
Valued at MVR 89.63 million, the project will reclaim 10.15 hectares of land and include the construction of a 10,962-meter rock boulder revetment and a 362-meter geobag revetment, along with 88 meters of groynes.
Gulhi, home to approximately 800 people, is known for its beauty and tourist appeal but faces a land shortage, limiting the development of homes and businesses. With 15 guesthouses, the island has limited space to grow. The MTCC project aims to address these challenges by providing essential space for expansion, benefiting both the local community and the island’s tourism sector.
